WHAT ARE GROUND SCREWS (FOUNDATION SCREWS)?
Ground screws (also known as foundation screws or screw piles) are galvanised steel anchors that are drilled directly into the ground to form a stable foundation. Ground screws use helical blades along the shaft to secure the screw into the ground, creating a stable fixing point with significantly less excavation than many traditional foundation methods.
HOW DO GROUND SCREWS WORK?
Ground screws are mechanically driven into the soil to create a secure, load-bearing foundation. Rather than spreading weight across a slab, each screw transfers the load down its shaft into stable ground below, while the helical blades resist both downward movement and uplift. Because each screw can be installed to a different depth, they can help create a level foundation on sloping or uneven ground while reducing excavation requirements compared to some traditional foundation methods.

Ground screws, screw piles and helical piles are all foundation systems designed to provide strong structural support without the need for traditional concrete footings. While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, the systems are designed differently and may be specified for different ground conditions or project requirements.
Ground screws are commonly used for conservatories, extensions, garden rooms and modular buildings due to their fast installation and reduced site disruption. Helical piles and helical screw piles may be specified for projects requiring alternative foundation solutions, challenging site conditions, ground requirements and structural design.
The Durabase system can be paired with both ground screw and helical pile foundation solutions, helping to create a fast, efficient and reliable base for a wide range of building projects. Ground screws or helical piles are not provided by Durabase and must be installed by a specialist provider.

Ground screws provide the foundational support, while the Durabase system forms the insulated structural base on top. The two work together as a complete ground screw base solution, part of a Building Regulations compliant system.
